Crack out the egg creams folks — new Spider-Man Noir news coming at you faster than you can swing a punch at a Nazi! Back in May, we learned that Nicolas Cage is set to reprise his Spider-Verse role as a 30s PI take on everybody's favourite friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man in a new live-action Prime Video series. Today, per Deadline's reporting, we've learned that the series — formerly Noir, now more synergistically titled Spider-Noir — has added comic actor Lamorne Morris to its cast, with the New Girl star set to play Robbie Robertson in the show.
One of the first major black characters in comic books, Robertson — first seen in The Amazing Spider-Man #51 back in 1967 — has regularly featured as a Daily Bugle journo. What's more, in the Spider-Man Noir: Eyes Without A Face run, Robertson appeared as a reporter at The Negro World, speaking out against racism and tangling with Doc Ock in an incendiary slavery storyline.
Based on the character description shared by Variety, Morris' take on the character tallies with the Noir comics' Robbie Robertson. Check it out: “Driven, hard-working, and won’t take no for an answer. A dedicated journalist trying to make it with the odds stacked against him as a black professional in 1930s New York. He takes on riskier stories that no one else would touch in order to catch attention and a paycheck. He is willing to do whatever is necessary for his career.”
As for the wider plot of co-showrunners Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot's series, all we know so far is that the show is set in the 30s and will see Cage's Fedora-fitted webslinger reckoning with his past life as New York's one and only superhero. In a New Yorker profile published yesterday though, star Cage let slip that the series is set to consist of eight 45-minute episodes, feature monsters, and carry a Roy Lichtenstein-like Pop Art vibe. So far it's a yes from us to everything about Spider-Noir. And until we hear more, we're off to get a trench coat and solve Rubiks Cubes in the rain!
