Steven Spielberg Blunt hit incoming? Quite possibly, folks! As we reported last month, the legendary Jaws filmmaker is returning to summer blockbuster territory with a new "event movie" for Universal and Amblin in 2026. And whilst details on the project have remained very hush-hush thus far, we now know at least one of the actors Spielberg has in mind to star. According to Deadline, The Fall Guy's Emily Blunt, who's currently hard at work on A24's The Smashing Machine with Dwayne Johnson, is in talks to star in the film.
Long-time Spielberg collaborators David Koepp (Jurassic Park, War Of The Worlds) and Kristie Macosko Krieger (The Fabelmans, West Side Story) are respectively set to write and produce the movie, vaguely described as a two-hander. Blunt then, presumably, would be one of said hands, though the exact nature of the Oscar nominated Oppenheimer actor's prospective role in the film remains, like much else thus far, a mystery. That being said, Variety did excitingly report a little while back that Spielberg was working on a UFO movie, which would certainly fit the bill for the feted filmmaker's summer tentpole comeback.
And lest we forget, Blunt is no stranger to a sci-fi or two herself, having starred in the likes of Edge Of Tomorrow (which somehow celebrated its 10th anniversary this week!) and A Quiet Place in her time. So could she be heading for some Close Encounters Of The Third Kind perhaps here? A little E.T action per chance? For now, your guess is as good as ours. But we'll all find out when Spielberg's latest hits cinemas Stateside on 15 May, 2026. Steven Spielberg summer blockbusters are so back, baby!
