At the end of one of the most scattershot awards seasons in recent memory (Who saw CODA in 2021? Who expected a Power of the Dog sweep? What about Lady Gaga?), the 2022 Oscars were high in emotions and full of surprises. There were some heartening moments, as Troy Kotsur made history as the first Deaf actor to win an Oscar and Jane Campion became the third woman to win for Best Director, and some more shocking turns following an altercation between Will Smith and Chris Rock which took the world by surprise. But Hollywood’s biggest night soldiered on, swerving expectations and still celebrating some of the best films of the year.

Read Empire’s complete coverage of the 2021 Oscars here – all the winners, our blow-by-blow live blog of the entire ceremony, the best images from the show and the red carpet, and much more.
