Fresh news in from The Continent: The Witcher is both stopping and starting. By which we mean, Netflix’s adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy novels (which in turn inspired the mega-popular Witcher video games) has officially gone into production on Season 4, getting cameras rolling on Liam Hemsworth’s version of sword-swinging monster-slayer Geralt Of Rivia as he picks up the dual blades from Henry Cavill; but along with that news comes confirmation from the streaming service that the show will also be wrapping up for good. Yes, The Witcher is confirmed to end with Season 5 – tasking Hemsworth with not only continuing Geralt’s adventures, but bringing them to a close too.
Netflix has announced that Season 4 and Season 5 will shoot back-to-back, adapting the events of several Sapkowski tomes – Baptism Of Fire, The Tower Of The Swallow, and Lady Of The Lake. Here’s an official synopsis for what Season 4 has in store: “After the shocking, Continent-altering events that close out season three, the new season follows Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri who are faced with traversing the war-ravaged Continent and its many demons apart from each other. If they can embrace and lead the groups of misfits they find themselves in, they have a chance of surviving the baptism of fire — and finding one another again.”
While the show has had a tumultuous journey over the last few years – largely due to its switch-up in leading man – fans can rest easy knowing that The Witcher will have a confirmed ending; a fate that doesn’t always befall a Netflix show. And showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich promises a blowout to end on. “It is with huge pride that we begin shooting our penultimate season of The Witcher with a stellar cast, including some exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia,” she says. “We’re thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion. It wouldn’t be our show if we didn’t push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends.”
With cameras only just rolling on Season 4, expect a bit of a wait for it to reach your eyeballs. In the meantime, we’re off to boot up The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for the millionth time.
